Defense in a war city is structurally different to normal COC defense.
The idea is to not let the opposition gain any stars at all! It doesn't matter about resources at all in a war city, you can't lose anything at all in that respect, so you could use your stores as buffers if you like. It is therefore not in the least essential that your stores are centrally placed as they are in your 'normal' village.
What is essential is that your defensive weapons & above all your castle are protected & centrally placed. Your castle troops are a major kingpin of your defense & if they are difficult to lure out & kill by the attacker then more often or not the attack is doomed. That was a major reason why we lost the last war. The enemy were quite good at luring out our castle troops & killing them whilst on the other hand there were attacks by us where there was no attempt to kill the defending troops before sending in our army. You will have noticed that on those occasions there was, more often than not, a spectacular failure.
So, the long & short of it means that a centrally disposed castle is a must when designing your war city. When you have made you war city click on the castle & you will see a white circle around it. If a troop gets inside that circle then the defending castle troops will come out. Once they are out of the castle then they will go to wherever an attacking troop is no matter where on the map it is.
Now lets talk about putting buildings round the periphery of your map, most often builders hut is the corners. I have often seen the adage that placing buildings in the corners can be the difference between a 2 star & a 3 star. Whilst this may be true in a normal village I suggest that in a war city it is not necessarily a good thing. I certainly love to see this when I am attacking someone because I know that once I have lured the castle troops & heroes, all I have to do is put a barb onto the builders hut & the defending castle troops & heroes will head straight for that barb & walk into an ambush of my barbs & archers which will kill them off. Job done, you can then get on with attacking the enemy unhindered by defending troops. So I say, if you put a building outside the walls always try to make sure it is within range of a defensive weapon so they will use more troops to kill your castle troops.
Traps & bombs next..... It seems that hogs are often used in clan wars so you need to think about how to defend against them. The best defense is to stop someone attacking you in the first place! If they are a hog user and they see a base that has open areas big enough to take 2 giant bombs and placed between 2 defensive weapons, then this could be a Hog trap. 2 giant bombs detonated together will wipe out all the hogs in the immediate area whether they are under a healing spell or not. Spring traps placed between defensive buildings is also a good anti hog device & also a good anti giant device. So think carefully where you place your traps & bombs! The idea is to take out as many of the attackers big guys like giants or hogs as possible before they can do too much damage.
What about aerial defense. Well, try not to have your air def too near the outside of your war city. It is too easy to take them out & then you are at the mercy of giant/healer army, balloonion, dragons & minion attack. So try to get at least one of them fairly central. Your red air bombs (most effective against minions) and your black seeking air mines are best placed around the outside where they can kill healers etc before they start healing the giants etc.
What about walls..... Well, double walls are ineffective against wall breakers, their splash damage will almost always blow up the second row too. So try not to use double walls. If you use the walls to break up your war city into small compartments, that is when they are most effective. They essentially slow down the advance of the attackers letting your defensive weapons target them while they try to bash their way through the walls. So lots of little compartments is good, one big compartment surrounded by one wall is bad!
As far as defending troops in the castles are concerned, we feel that a high level Dragon/Wizard/archer combo is best. They are all effective against both ground and air attacks & the high damage from the dragon & wizzies can win the day almost on their own...so long as they haven't been lured out!
I think that is all I have to say on Defense for the moment, any comments?
